The Legend of Carcassonne
Legend has it that in medieval France, the walled city of Carcassonne came under siege by Charlemagne’s army. The city was surrounded and food was running short. The Queen of Carcassonne summoned her subjects and asked for an inventory of remaining supplies. “We’ve only a pig, some truffles, some caviar and olives remaining, Dame”, they humbly explained. “Feed everything we have to the pig”, she directed. The subjects were horrified, how would they survive? They hesitated, but she held firm, commanding them to do as she ordered. As they made to leave her presence, she added, “And once the pig is fed, bring it here before me”. Muttering and mumbling, the subjects of Carcassonne did as they were ordered and fattened up the pig with all that remained of their stores. Then as instructed, they brought the pig before the Queen, who was seated in her large receiving chamber. “Now catapult the pig over the ramparts and into the army’s encampment”, she commanded. There were howls of despair. The Queen had surely lost her mind. They wanted to argue, but all knew that to argue with the Queen meant certain beheading. Besides, she had never failed them before, so as one, they secured the pig to the catapult and sent it flying over the stone ramparts. The pig, with its belly stretched to bursting point, exploded on impact, right in the middle of the army’s stronghold. Charlemagne himself strode forward to see what all the commotion was about. Upon seeing the pig and the contents of its belly, he exclaimed, “If this is what they can afford to feed their pigs, we’ve been wasting our time! Sound the orders to decamp immediately. We’ll move on to the next city and try our luck there”. And so, the moral of the story is, that when faced with fear, when taking a step into the unknown, just give it everything you’ve got!
Our Giving Story
The city of Carcassonne, as you have read, was saved by a pig, so what more wonderful and fitting way could we play a part in changing the lives of families living in severe poverty than to gift them a piglet. For these desperately poor families, the gift of a pig will mean the opportunity to develop at last, a sustainable income. It will change the future for their children and the generation to follow.
How does it work? Well, every time you attend a Carcassonne business training workshop, we express our gratitude by gifting one percent of your attendance fee to the purchase of a piglet for a family in severe need somewhere in the world. To explain how real that one percent is, it means that together we, you and I, change the lives of ONE family every time we run a full-day workshop. EVERY TIME. So, if we hold three full-day workshops a week, that's THREE families per week we can start on a journey of self-sufficiency; not just a hand -out, but the opportunity for a family to take control of its own future and with it, restore their sense of pride and self-worth. This is a gift that keeps giving - the pig's offspring are sold or bartered or slaughtered, and finally the family can tjoin the local economy. Now, isn't that a great reason to choose us as your company training provider? We can't do it without your support, so contact us today to arrange your full-day training workshop and join us in a world full of sharing the joy of giving .....pigs!
